Lob alternatives: is paperplane the right one?
By Justin Winter · Updated August 25, 2026
The short answer
Lob is the established direct-mail API for production programs: official SDKs, postcards, checks and address verification at volume. paperplane fits a narrower job: one US letter with no account, or an AI agent that needs to mail something after a human approves the total.
Why people look for an alternative to Lob
- Lob requires an account and API keys before the first send, even on its free Developer tier. lob.com, checked August 25, 2026.
- Custom envelopes, specialty mailers and HIPAA support are listed as Enterprise-only. lob.com, checked August 25, 2026.
- Paid plans start at $260 a month for the Startup tier. lob.com, checked August 25, 2026.

Competitor cells come from Lob’s own pages, last checked August 25, 2026. A cell that says “not listed” means the page did not mention it, not that the product lacks it. Prices change; check their site before you rely on a number.
Where Lob is the better choice
- Official SDKs, checks, address verification and production-scale programs.
- International mail and custom-artwork postcards.
- Mature account controls, roles and enterprise support.
Where paperplane is the better choice
- A single letter with no account, key or plan.
- An MCP server and a confirmation-token approval step built for agents.
- One published all-in price per piece shown before you pay.
Who should switch, and who should not
Stay with Lob if you need: Production programs sending postcards, checks or letters at volume, in more than one country.
Try paperplane if you need: One-off letters, small teams, and agents that need to send mail only after approval.
Switching in practice
Concept map for developers
Lob letters map to paperplane orders. Lob verifies an address then creates a letter; paperplane quotes first, then sends with the confirmation token. Send with the sandbox flag to test without mailing.
What will not move
Checks, international destinations, custom-artwork postcards and bulk campaign tooling are not available here. Keep Lob for those.
Other options worth a look
- PostGrid: Teams mailing at volume across several countries from a CRM.
- PostalForm: International or Canadian registered mail, teams that want roles and approvals, and the lowest Certified price.
- Click2Mail: Campaigns, booklets and print-format variety.

Questions before you send
If something goes wrong, do I pay?
If we cannot mail the letter, the hold on your card is released and you are not charged. If a letter fails after your card is charged, you are refunded automatically and in full.
Is paperplane a drop-in replacement for Lob?
No. Lob covers postcards, checks and international mail at scale with official SDKs. paperplane sends US letters, postcards and notecards, has no official SDKs yet and no bulk campaign object. It fits one letter or an agent, not a full Lob migration.
Does Lob have an MCP server?
Lob does not list one on its pricing page as of the date shown. Check Lob directly before relying on that, since it can change.
